Every transcription is available in four formats: TXT (plain text, optionally with speaker prefixes), SRT (the classic subtitle format with timestamps for YouTube, Spotify and Premiere), VTT (WebVTT standard for HTML5 video players on your own site) and JSON (structured, with word-level timestamps, confidence scores and speaker labels for custom pipelines, NVivo, MAXQDA or other tools). Which format you need depends on the use case — see below. One note upfront: we don't offer DOCX (Word file) — that's a deliberate decision. If you need Word, export TXT and convert in one step — see FAQ.

Why we can claim this

Four formats, one click

TXT, SRT, VTT, JSON — as direct download buttons in the transcription detail page. Also available via API.

Word-level timestamps in JSON

Every word carries `start`, `end`, `confidence` and `speaker`. Perfect for search, highlights and pipelines.

SRT/VTT with speaker prefix

Subtitles are exported with speaker names — "Dr Meier: Let's get started."

REST API & webhooks

`GET /v1/transcriptions/{id}/export?format=srt` — programmatic access for CI pipelines and automation.

In practice

What this looks like in practice

TXT, SRT, VTT, JSON. Subtitles for YouTube, structured data for pipelines, readable text for show notes.

  • TXT — plain text. Ideal for show notes, blog posts, quick skim-reading, copy-and-paste into Word/Pages.
  • SRT — subtitles with timestamps. Standard for YouTube upload, Spotify video, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve.
  • VTT — WebVTT, the HTML5 standard. For your own `<video>` and `<audio>` elements with `<track>` on your own site.
  • JSON — structured data with `words: [{ text, start, end, confidence, speaker }]`. For NVivo, MAXQDA, custom search and ML pipelines.
  • All formats preserve speaker labels. Rename speakers in the editor — exports pick up the new names.

How to use it

Up and running in a few steps

  1. 1

    1. Pick a format

    On the transcription detail page, top right: four download buttons. TXT for reading, SRT for YouTube, VTT for your own site, JSON for pipelines.

  2. 2

    2. JSON example (word level with speaker)

    ```json { "text": "Good morning. Hi everyone.", "language": "en", "duration": 4.2, "words": [ { "text": "Good", "start": 0.10, "end": 0.42, "confidence": 0.98, "speaker": 1 }, { "text": "morning.", "start": 0.42, "end": 0.96, "confidence": 0.97, "speaker": 1 }, { "text": "Hi", "start": 2.10, "end": 2.30, "confidence": 0.96, "speaker": 2 }, { "text": "everyone.","start": 2.30, "end": 3.05, "confidence": 0.95, "speaker": 2 } ] } ```
  3. 3
    3. Via the API
    `GET /v1/transcriptions/{id}/export?format=srt` with your API key returns the file directly. Perfect for build pipelines that generate subtitles after every podcast upload.
  4. 4
    4. Webhook + auto-export
    Configure a `transcription.completed` webhook → in your receiver, fetch the desired format → automatically write into your CMS, Drive or S3.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the export buttons?+
On the transcription detail page (`/dashboard` → click a transcription) — top right, four buttons: "TXT", "SRT", "VTT", "JSON". Each button downloads the file directly.
Which format for YouTube?+
SRT. YouTube Studio imports SRT directly under "Subtitles" → "Upload". VTT also works there, but SRT is the established standard. If you've renamed speakers, the names appear as a prefix in each subtitle.
Which format do I need as a clinician / qualitative researcher?+
JSON. The JSON export carries word-level timestamps, confidence scores and speaker labels — everything you need for downstream work in NVivo, MAXQDA or ATLAS.ti. For a quick chart note, grab TXT alongside.
Can I export DOCX (Word)?+
No, we don't offer DOCX directly. Reason: Word formatting is highly complex and in practice customers want their own templates anyway. Workflow: download TXT → open or paste into Word/Pages → done. If you do need DOCX export, let us know — if demand is sufficient, we'll build it.
What's the practical difference between SRT and VTT?+
SRT is the older, more widely supported format — accepted by YouTube, Spotify, Premiere, DaVinci and every subtitle editor. VTT (WebVTT) is the HTML5 standard and is played natively by `<video>`/`<audio>` with `<track>` in browsers. Pick VTT for your own site, SRT for external platforms.
